I was so used to the old Google Analytics interface that it was really hard for me to come around to the new version… In the beginning it was really hard because the new beta version looked so unfriendly and different…

But after few days I found a few really good features in the new Google Analytics version and I stopped complaining.

Did you know that now you can see the real time data in Google Analytics?

Google launched the real time data in Google Analytics about month ago. The real time data reports are of course available only in the new version of Google Analytics. To have access to it you need to be administrator of the Google Analytics account.

What can do you need real time data for?

I think the most obvious reason is to see the immediate impact (like increase in traffic, traffic sources, most popular pages etc.) of your marketing campaigns like emails, TV commercials or blogging in social media.

I’m sure that everyone will find something interesting with these reports.

What information is available in the real time reports in Google Analytics?

With the real time data you can see how many visitors are on your site right now, how they get there and what they are looking for. These reports are processed in real time – every second.

The real time data report section can be found under the Home tab in the new version of Google Analytics.

Under the real time (beta) section you can find the following reports:

overview

locations

traffic sources

content

Let’s take a little deeper look on real time reports.

Real time overview report

On the overview report you can see how many people are on your site right now. You will also find the amount of new and returning visitors.

The report on the top right shows number of pageviews per minute and per second.

You can also see the most popular content at this moment (top active pages), where visitors are coming from (top referring sites and organic/paid keywords they used to get to your site) and a top locations map showing from which country/city the visitors are coming from.

Real Time location report

The location report will show you a country breakdown of your visitors. You can also go deeper in this report and check from which city your visitors are coming from.

With the location report you are able to see also the country breakdown using the Google Earth map.

Real Time traffic sources report

This report shows you where all the current visitors are coming from. You will see the medium and source of this traffic.

You can also go deeper in this report by clicking on the traffic sources.

Clicking on the organic and paid traffic source will break the results by keywords which visitors used to get to your site. Referral traffic source will break the results by site and direct traffic sources will break the results by landing page.

Real time content report

On this report you can view how many active users are viewing a specific page right now. Clicking on each page reveals the traffic sources for each.

With the content report you can also see the overall data for the last 30 minutes.

During analyzing the real time data you can notice that some rows of the data are mark in green and red. These colours indicate if the numbers have increased or decreased.

And the last thing to remember – Real Time data does not support filters! So even though you’re looking on the filtered profile (with ie. exclude IP addresses filters, search and replace filters, full URL display filter etc.) the data, you will see on the real time reports, won’t be filtered.

Unfortunately the real time reports do not include ecommerce data or goal reports but I hope you will find these reports really interesting as I did!

On Friday afternoon one of my clients called and asked me to help linking their Google Analytics account with a different AdWords account.

Even though I’ve done this before many times this time Google had decided to change the user interface, unfortunately making the whole process very unfriendly and unintuitive. With no instructions to be found anywhere! I had a hard time to finding out how to do this… but after some persistence I finally figured out how to do it. So I thought why not help everyone out by sharing what I found out.

How I linked Google AdWords cost data to my Google Analytics profile?

Before you start, make sure that the Google account you are using has administrative access to your Google Analytics and AdWords accounts.

Let’s start:

1. Sign in to your AdWords account at https://adwords.google.com.

step-1-linking-adwords-to-Google-Analytics

2. Click on the Reporting and Tools tab.

step-2 LInking Google Adwords cost data to Google Analytics

3. From the drop down menu choose Google Analytics.

step-3-linking-google-analytics-toadwords

4. To apply the cost data to your Google Analytics account with AdWords account you need to use new version of Google Analytics. Click on the New version link which you can find at the top right.

I’ve just finished reading Ambient Findability by Peter Morville. Even though the book is six years old now, I highly recommend it to everyone who is interested in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) regardless of their area of expertise. As the author says, “findability flows across the borders between design, engineering, and marketing”, and all parts should collaborate in order to succeed.

Morville explains that findability can be measured by studying the attributes of an individual object and evaluating how well a system supports peoples ability to find their way and find what they need. “An orange life jacket fails to grab attention in an orange ocean, but a statistically improbable phrase jumps right out in the sea of books”, he illustrates. “In the physical environment, size, shape, colour, and location set objects apart. In the digital realm, we rely on words”.

The book tells a bit of the history of wayfinding in natural and built environments and describes how instinctively we applied some of its principals when we entered the the virtual world of websites. We navigate the Internet through paths (links) in search of a district (information object), and remember (bookmark) landmarks. Although there’s no question that some of the principles of wayfinding in the physical world apply to the virtual world, Morville emphasises that our spatial metaphors have limits.

“We do experience movement through sites. We can even rely on egocentric dead-reckoning techniques for wayfinding by recalling, for instance, that it was two clicks deep into the product taxonomy before the whitepaper link appeared. But that distance is not real. There’s always a shortcut. There’s always another route. A keyword search sorts through four billion pages in a quarter of second. Google requires no metaphor. Just results.”

He recalls a couple of companies who promised to improve web search through visualisation techniques, but failed. A better approach, he suggests, we should concentrate on our ability to interpret language.

“While the Web celebrates hypermedia, it is first and foremost a textual medium for communication and information sharing. Our experience on the Web depends upon the use of words to convey meaning. Words as labels. Words as links. Keywords. And although it’s possible to communicate topical similarity visually as semantic distance, the images adds little to the text.”

Yes, the web is huge and content is the king. On the following posts, I will write about how Web Standards and Accessibility techniques and guidelines can contribute to make your content findable.

Localization often takes a back seat in the marketing world. Many companies are too ethnocentric to even consider non-English speaking markets to be worth pursuing but, in this economy, who can afford to be arrogant enough to turn away any potential customers?

Despite the opportunity to expand into international online markets, Marketing Directors tend to feel more comfortable focusing on their own countries online, perhaps through lack of knowledge or awareness of how easy and cheap it can be to test potential foreign markets online. Even targeting minorities in your own country could increase your website’s performance and sales: in the United States, there are over 43 million Hispanics/Latinos with a purchasing power of more than $800 billion a year, and almost 16 million of them are on the Internet. It’s because of impressive numbers like these that companies like Best Buy have started to launch Hispanic American sites.

Many companies are now creating country-specific websites in an effort to capture international markets, often by simply translating their existing sites. Unfortunately, this isn’t good enough in most cases: carefully crafted sales copy, marketing messages, communication and calls to action all suffer through literal translations. Literal translations will leave your company’s site looking unprofessional, lowering customer trust and goodwill towards your brand.

Having an online presence has unintentionally introduced many products and services into the global market before they had been prepared internationalization. There are a large number of non-English speakers who will purchase goods from English-language sites despite the language barrier. If you analyse your site traffic and find that you have a large volume of international traffic, you may want to create one or more country sub-sites, tailored to that traffic, to increase website sales or conversions.

It is important to remember that there is a difference between translation and localization: a good localization service will convert your existing content and communication tools into a message and tone of voice appropriate to the target region, while maintaining the integrity of your brand. The challenge is often cultural rather than linguistic, and translating brands and slogans around the world is a difficult task, with which even multinational giants like Pepsi, Genral Motors and Kentucky Fried Chicken have had issues.

Pepsi’s slogan “Pepsi Brings you Back to Life,” literally translated into Chinese, became “Pepsi Brings Your Ancestors Back from the Grave,” whilst KFC’s slogan “finger lickin’ good” became “eat your fingers off.” General Motors had a perplexing problem when they introduced the Chevy Nova in South America: despite their best efforts, they weren’t selling many cars until they realized that, in Spanish, “nova” means “it won’t go”. Sales improved dramatically after the car was renamed the “Caribe.”

Your individual country sites should not just be translated and then left to gather dust. Language is only one barrier in cross cultural communication, and calls to actions and sales copy will also need to tailored to your target audience. Even in English, messages can be “lost in translation” when they cross the Atlantic, especially when dealing with humour, style, design, fashion and music: the difference between radio advertisements in the US And the UK is dramatic, even when they are for the same product, because of the need to pitch for different markets.

Your website’s performance and conversion rate are affected by its communication, sales incentive, design and layout. Different cultures have different associations with dates, colours and images. For example, it would be unwise to begin a large sale in the US on September the 11th, purple is associated with mourning in Latin America, and some site layouts may pose difficulties in countries that do not use Roman alphabet.

Bricks-and-mortar food chains, such as McDonalds, have found that changes to their menus are a great way to “golocalize” their brand without losing their identity. McDonalds changes its menus in different regions in order to appeal to the local culture: in a McDonald’s in Belgium or Holland, you’ll be given the option of fritesaus over mayonnaise, in Canada you can enjoy a locally-inspired Poutine instead of your fries, and in India you can get one of these fantastic looking McAlooTikka burgers!

If you have country sites, they may be lacking in “glocalization.” Your websites are far more likely to succeed in an international market when the communication, products and services are adapted to the local culture of their target areas. Glocalization can be easily achieved by engaging with your audience on a local level. Employing local agencies will help you pitch to your target audience more effectively, and they will be able to point out any potential pitfalls in your campaign communication.

Online communication allows you to reach a larger audience and to behave as a local brand for them: it’s important to speaking to them locally as well!
